Saw the new star wars movie . . .

. . . and I was underwhelmed.
My disclaimer is that I am not, and never have been, a star wars fan.

Three major things struck me.

1) I still don't get the force. Sometimes you can slam a guy down to the ground with the force, but other times you gotta use a light sabre? Can't you just use the force to give the enemies a bad haircut, so they're too embarassed to fight?

2) All that technology and firepower, and these guys are fighting major air and land battles with hundreds of men and vehicles close enough to touch each other. The history of warfare has been that of increasing range and lethality of weapons that PREVENTS the massing of forces. But that's just the military history nerd in me.

3) The scenes with Anakin (spelling?) and Padme (??) are unbelievably stiff. I have a challenge for anyone with the stomach for it. George Lucas produced a previous bomb called Howard the Duck, in which an alien humanoid duck named Howard gets lucky with Lea Thompson. Watch the movie, and tell me if the scenes with Howard and Lea aren't more real than Anakin and Padme.

Q and A

Q: What's the number one pick-up line of all time?

A: "Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform to you?"

Saturday, May 28, 2005

People are so fat these days . . .

because of all the high calorie "ready to eat" foods.

When I was growing up, about all you could just pick up and eat without preparation was maybe some fruits and vegetables, or some cereal. Now there's all sorts of things you can stuff your face with that requires minimal to no preparation; you can gorge yourself on a whim.

IMHO.

Sunday night odds and ends

I'ts 108 degrees today at the undisclosed location in the desert.
That's too hot, too early, even for Arizona.
For this and other reasons that would bore you my posting is limited today.
Just a couple things.
The Chairman and his chat is back, at 8-9:30 AM Eastern, which I believe is 00-dark-30 in Beijing. I'll try to be there for some part of that.
Richard Russell is sending out a direct mailing that has a chart of the NYSE composite. Darned if it isn't a beautiful head and shoulders top. Or would be, if we break below the right shoulder. Russell has been bearish for about 6 or 7 years now--he did call the top. While he's kinda annoying and pedantic at times, he has forgotten more about the markets than I will likely ever know, so it's worth keeping that one in the back of one's mind.
Which I will in the days and weeks to come.
Have a great week.

Fox Saturday Morning "Business Bloc" and real estate

Nothing terribly memorable on the Fox shows this AM.

Jim Rogers never said "balderdash" :>(

On Cashin In, real estate:is it a bubble was discussed for the 257th time.

This week's real estate junkie made the usual arguments in favor of taking all your money and using it to buy all the properties you can, using interest-only mortgages, because your income will go up over the years and so will the value of the real estate, so why not?

I exaggerate a little, but only a little. The usual answers were given, that sure, if your income keeps rising, and the property values rise, it will work out, but what if either of those things doesn't happen.

It got me to thinking--I know a few people who have "flipped" vacant lots around here for 50% or more profit in a few years, as well as people who have sold homes for similar gains (or even bigger ones) in only a couple years. Again, if your income and home value go up a lot, it doesn't matter what you do--interest only, high down payment, low, whatever--you're gonna do okay.
The whole thing reminds me of nothing so much as the Nasdaq in 98 and 99--go long anything, and you look like a genius. Just don't be margined to the hilt in March 2000 . . .

Sunday Night Charts for May 15, 2005

Let's start with the weekly chart of the Nasdaq.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Rangebound between about 2100 and 1900--pretty boring, huh? Just wait, the fun is only started.

Look at the CRB

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Break of the uptrend line, and I'd say that 300 has to hold to stay bullish.

Gold.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Support is not holding--this is the worst this chart has looked for the bulls in months.

VIX

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
THIS is significant--has the VIX found support above the old downtrend line?

And last but not least, the USD

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
By George, I think the dollar's downtrend is broken!

So, I'm seeing potential turning points in the CRB, Gold, the buck, and volatility.
I think that means something . . .

Have a great week everyone!

Fox Saturday Morning "Business Bloc" . . .re-evaluated

I gotta be honest--I'm re-evaluationg my weekly posts on Fox's Saturday morning finance shows. First of all, I'm not really sure that watching and commenting on them religiously is a money-making use of my time, since it seems to be more blather and fewer ideas.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, I've noticed that the "recaps" Fox posts here on Monday of the previous Saturday's shows, have gotten more and more like complete transcripts of the show. Way back when, they were incomplete recaps, but now, there is very little being left out. It's certainly easier (and faster) to just skim thru the recaps for any worthwhile ideas.

It's all about using your time, and watching these shows (even on a DVR and flipping thru the commercials) has not been a profitable use of my time. I may still comment from time to time, but I don't think I'll be making regular summaries.

Sunday Night Charts for May 8, 2005

Brief version tonight.
Let's start with the weekly chart of the Nasdaq.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Has bounced off a support line, and though a previous uptrend has been broken, it isn't really in a downtrend. It isn't in an uptrend either, until it gets back up above 2150 or so.

Next is the CRB

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
CRB is still in an uptrend. Might be an entry with a tight stop.

Gold.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Gold is in a similar spot, hugging an uptrend line. If 425 holds, this might be a good low risk entry.

Now the continuing saga of the USD

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
USD has been within a tight range. Technically, it is similar to the Naz, but upside down. Clearly bearish below 80, and arguably a change of trend above 85.

Have a great week everyone!

Happy Mother's Day!!

to all the mothers out there.
I spend a lot of time/effort on making money, but sooner or later you gotta just live.
Everybody should spend a little time with his/her mother, and/or the mother of his children today.

Berkshire AGM notes

One set of notes I've found is here.

Sunday Night Charts for May 1, 2005

Let's start with the weekly chart of the Nasdaq.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Right at resistance; if it doesn't hold, next stop is 1750.

Next is the CRB

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Still a solid uptrend.

Gold.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Surprisingly, uptrend is still intact; kind of a "stealth" bull market in gold.

VIX

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Pulling back, but still above the downtrend line.

Now the continuing saga of the USD

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Could go either way.

Black gold--WTIC.

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Double top, but still a solid longer term uptrend.

Next is one I've done a lot of handwringing about--CME

Courtesy of stockcharts.com
Quite the solid recovery, although I expect some "bagholders" to sell if it rises much more.

TNX

No rising rates yet.

Have a great week everyone!

Weekend Wazzup for May 1, 2005

My roundup of the Fox News Channel' s "Cost of Freedom" Saturday Morning shows-- is here.

On the blogs this weekend, Ron Sen quotes Jeremy Grantham and asks who do you trust? On his Chart Student site he shows the XAU beaten like a rented mule and tries to unjumble the SPY. Galatime points out another managed options program. Tom Ott at Sixth World shows a bearish SP500 chart. And as usual, Bill Cara's review of the week is a must read, even if I don't know what an "Entity Relation Model" is. The Soothsayer of Omaha has a nice review of some charts and indices, and finds little to get excited about.

Chairman MaoXian is traveling to the motherland, but I'm sure his newsletter and chat will be back eventually. Stockcoach is back after a tough month for him, we extend our sympathies and look forward to his portfolio updates. Stephen Castellano at Reflections on Equity Research has been busy updating his Maverick Society of Investment Research site, which is worth a click, since it represents what might well be the future of equity research. Byrne's Marketview tries to fact-check the fact checkers. Random Roger makes some good points about stop loss orders.

I encourage everyone to check out the Present Moment Trading Campaign by Market Monk, among other things, he posts some nice charts, like this one. Uglychart continues his "remainder" contest for stock market blogs. He also promises that his site will always be free. The Alchemy of Trading has some comments on a couple things in Barron's, he also usually has a good Sunday night overview. Watch for it. Also watch for the LBR group's Sunday night chat--they usually have some good stuff.

Have a good Sunday, and I'll be back tonight for Sunday night charts.
