Saw the new star wars movie . . .

. . . and I was underwhelmed.
My disclaimer is that I am not, and never have been, a star wars fan.

Three major things struck me.

1) I still don't get the force. Sometimes you can slam a guy down to the ground with the force, but other times you gotta use a light sabre? Can't you just use the force to give the enemies a bad haircut, so they're too embarassed to fight?

2) All that technology and firepower, and these guys are fighting major air and land battles with hundreds of men and vehicles close enough to touch each other. The history of warfare has been that of increasing range and lethality of weapons that PREVENTS the massing of forces. But that's just the military history nerd in me.

3) The scenes with Anakin (spelling?) and Padme (??) are unbelievably stiff. I have a challenge for anyone with the stomach for it. George Lucas produced a previous bomb called Howard the Duck, in which an alien humanoid duck named Howard gets lucky with Lea Thompson. Watch the movie, and tell me if the scenes with Howard and Lea aren't more real than Anakin and Padme.

Q and A

Q: What's the number one pick-up line of all time?

A: "Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform to you?"

Saturday, May 28, 2005

People are so fat these days . . .

because of all the high calorie "ready to eat" foods.

When I was growing up, about all you could just pick up and eat without preparation was maybe some fruits and vegetables, or some cereal. Now there's all sorts of things you can stuff your face with that requires minimal to no preparation; you can gorge yourself on a whim.

IMHO.

Sunday night odds and ends

I'ts 108 degrees today at the undisclosed location in the desert.
That's too hot, too early, even for Arizona.
For this and other reasons that would bore you my posting is limited today.
Just a couple things.
The Chairman and his chat is back, at 8-9:30 AM Eastern, which I believe is 00-dark-30 in Beijing. I'll try to be there for some part of that.
Richard Russell is sending out a direct mailing that has a chart of the NYSE composite. Darned if it isn't a beautiful head and shoulders top. Or would be, if we break below the right shoulder. Russell has been bearish for about 6 or 7 years now--he did call the top. While he's kinda annoying and pedantic at times, he has forgotten more about the markets than I will likely ever know, so it's worth keeping that one in the back of one's mind.
Which I will in the days and weeks to come.
Have a great week.

Fox Saturday Morning "Business Bloc" and real estate

Nothing terribly memorable on the Fox shows this AM.

Jim Rogers never said "balderdash" :>(

On Cashin In, real estate:is it a bubble was discussed for the 257th time.

This week's real estate junkie made the usual arguments in favor of taking all your money and using it to buy all the properties you can, using interest-only mortgages, because your income will go up over the years and so will the value of the real estate, so why not?

I exaggerate a little, but only a little. The usual answers were given, that sure, if your income keeps rising, and the property values rise, it will work out, but what if either of those things doesn't happen.

It got me to thinking--I know a few people who have "flipped" vacant lots around here for 50% or more profit in a few years, as well as people who have sold homes for similar gains (or even bigger ones) in only a couple years. Again, if your income and home value go up a lot, it doesn't matter what you do--interest only, high down payment, low, whatever--you're gonna do okay.
The whole thing reminds me of nothing so much as the Nasdaq in 98 and 99--go long anything, and you look like a genius. Just don't be margined to the hilt in March 2000 . . .
